    Plessey gets UK grant, Everlight and Nichia continue IP battle
    PlesseygetsUKgrant,EverlightandNichiacontinueIPbattle 2015-07-18 Plessey,Aixtron,andBrukerwilluseaUKgranttopursueGaN-on-SiLEDson200-mmsubstrates,whileNichiaattacksEverlightinGermanCourt,andOxfordInstrumentsannouncesPECVDsaletoChineseLEDmakerEnraytek. PlesseySemiconductors hasannouncedthatitwillworkwith AixtronandBrukerNanoSurfacesDivisiononaGBP1.3million(about$2million)UK-fundedresearchgrantfocusedonhigh-volumemanufacturingofgallium-nitride-on-silicon(GaN-on-Si)LEDs. Nichiaand Everlight continuetobattleonintellectualpropertyissueswithNichiawinningarulinginGermancourtthatatleasttemporarilyextendsthevalidityofitsYAG(yttriumaluminumgarnet)-basedpatentsformakingwhitephosphor-convertedLEDs.ChineseLEDmanufacturerEnraytekOptoelectronicshasordered"several"PlasmaPro800PECVD(plasma-enhancedchemicalvapordeposition)systemstoextendLEDmanufacturingcapacity. GaN-on-Siresearch InourfirstLEDbusinessstory,PlesseyhasbeenpursuingGaN-on-Sitechnologyasalowercostwaytomanufacturehigh-powerLEDsforseveralyears,althoughthecompanywillnowreceiveagrantfromtheUKAdvancedManufacturingSupplyChainInitiative(AMSCI)toadvancethecause.TheworkwilltakeplaceatPlessey'sDevonmanufacturingsiteasoneof20AMSCI-fundedprojectstotalingGBP67million(about$105million). "ThisprojectsupportstheworkwehaveongoingwithAixtronandBrukertofurtherincreasetheyieldofourGaN-on-siliconprocess,"saidPlesseyCTOKeithStrickland."Theseimprovementsarerequiredaspartofourmoveto200-mm(8-in.)siliconsubstrates.A200-mmwaferhasalmosttwicetheusableareaofourexisting150-mm(6-in.)wafersandthereforewillalmostdoublethenumberofLEDsproducedforthesamerelativecost." Plesseyandothershavesuccessfullymanufacturedsilicon-basedLEDs,althoughtheperformanceofsuchdevicestrailssapphire-basedLEDsconsiderably. PlesseysaidlastNovemberthatithadstartedvolumemanufacturingof20-mm2 GaN-on-Sidieona150-mmline.Butthecompanymuststillclosetheperformancegapandsolvethetransitiontolargerwaferstomeetitsgoals. EverlightversusNichia MovingtothecourtsinourLEDbusinessroundup,thebattlebetweenEverlightandNichiaseemsasifitwillneverend.NichiahasissuedtwopressreleasesaboutrulingsfromaMunich,Germany-basedcourtthatapparentlypreventEverlightfromengaginginLEDtransactionsbasedonclaimsthattheNichiaYAGpatentshavebeenstruckdown. Presumably,theGermanCourtruledthatEverlightElectronicsintheUSandEverlightElectronicsEuropewillbefinedformakingincorrectstatementsaboutthevalidityoftheNichiapatentsthatleadtonewbusinessforEverlight.NichiaassertsthatthepatentvalidityisstillbeforeUSandGermancourtsandthatfornowthepatentsshouldberespectedbythemarket. ThislatestactivityrelatestocourtwinsthatEverlightannouncedrecently.InApril, EverightissuednewsreleasesstatingthatUSandGermancourtshavefoundNichiapatentsonphosphor-convertedLEDstobeinvalid.Atthetime,NichiarefusedourrequestforacommentontheEverlightclaims.ButthelatestNichiaactionseemslikeashort-termattempttoextenditsIPauthority. OxfordbooksPECVDorders Finally,intheLEDmanufacturingarea,OxfordInstrumentsmadetheannouncementthatEnraytekhadplacedanorderforanunspecifiednumberofPECVDsystems.ThePECVDsystemsareanalternativetothemorewidelyusedMOCVD(metal-organicchemicalvapordeposition)systemsusedinLEDmanufacturing.OxfordhassaidthePECVDsystemsoffertheadvantageofalower-temperatureprocessandasimplerdryplasmatool-cleaningprocess. "AsoneofChina’sforemostLEDdesignandmanufacturingcompanies,cost-efficientandstate-of-the-artprocessingequipmentiskeyforEnraytek,"saidXuChunchao,vicepresidentofEnraytek."WechoseOxfordInstrumentssystemsfollowingarigorousselectionprocess,astheycouldofferustheadvancedtechnology,support,andcostofownershipwerequire." EnraytekmakesLEDsforboththedisplaybacklightingandgeneral-illuminationmarkets.ThenewsystemswillallowthecompanytomanufactureLEDsonsubstratesupto300mm.
